It seems like everyone these days has a side hustle — an alternative source of income outside their day job. Something to bring in a bit of extra cash to fund special vacations or a passion project that might just become the rocket launcher for a new life.

The prospect of starting out as an entrepreneur can feel daunting, even if you’ve got a background in business. Thankfully, the interest in side hustles has led to a library of books and other resources with guidance on every possible challenge you might face on the journey from corporate drone to the Next Big Thing.

Best Side Hustle Books

A quick Amazon search for ‘side hustle’ produces over 6,000 responses — and that’s just in the ‘Books’ department! We didn’t read them all — obviously — but we’ve read enough to know a good book when we see one. Below are the best side hustle books right now.

1. Side Hustle: From Idea to Income in 27 Days

Have a great idea for a side hustle but are not sure how to move from concept to execution? Or do you know you need a secondary income stream but feel overwhelmed by options? Chris Guillebeau’s straightforward guide to choosing and launching your side hustle will have you up and running in less than a month.

What You Will Learn

Chris walks you through every step of the process, from brainstorming ideas to gathering resources to getting paid.  He also provides a needed dose of structure and accountability. By dividing the book into days, each with its own mini-assignment or action item — Chris keeps you from getting stuck in overthinking or overwhelmed. Readers who complete Chris’ exercises as scheduled will have a viable side hustle in just 27 days.

Why We Like The Book

We love this book for its accessible writing and actionable plan to get you out of your own head and into the market. We also appreciate Chris’ unique take on using a side hustle to help you advance your more traditional career, as well as his efforts to build your confidence that you can, in fact, succeed as an entrepreneur no matter what your educational background or professional experience.

  • Apply “Tinder for Side Hustle” logic to pick the best idea at any time
  • Learn, gather, or create everything you need to launch; then set up a real-life way to get paid

2. 100 Side Hustles: Unexpected Ideas for Making Extra Money Without Quitting Your Day Job

If you like the sound of Chris Guillebeau’s Side Hustle: From Idea to Income in 27 Days but are stuck at the “What could I do for a side hustle?” stage, this is the book for you. Using practical examples culled from his audience of successful and budding entrepreneurs, he demonstrates how anyone, anywhere, can generate extra income. Along the way, you’ll discover 100 ideas for side hustles you might never have considered.

What You Will Learn

Rather than rely on general principles or abstract ideas, Chris goes straight to the good stuff: inspiring stories of how real people took an idea from concept to reality, complete with mini action plans and lists of resources if a specific hustle feels like a good fit for you and your skill set. You’ll also find useful data about the startup and running costs for different ideas.

Why We Like The Book

Even more than Chris’ other books, 100 Side Hustles is a true pleasure to read. We recommend splurging on a physical copy; the better to enjoy the full-color images and excellent design. If you’re a serial entrepreneur, you may just find yourself treating this like your personal side hustle encyclopedia!

  • Case studies feature teachers, artists, coders, and even entire families who’ve found ways to create new sources of income

3. The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich

You could argue that Tim Ferriss wrote the original book on side hustles when he published The 4-Hour Workweek in 2009. Less a guide to side hustles than a guide to life, Tim explains the steps he took to free himself from a conventional 9-to-5 job and work “smarter, not harder” while increasing his income.

What You Will Learn

According to Tim, anyone can increase their overall happiness and productivity while actually working less by following his DEAL framework. You’ll Define your goals, Eliminate time-wasting busywork, and Automate your remaining tasks as much as possible to arrive at Liberation, where you enjoy your less stressful, more intentional life. Tim does tend to focus on the possibilities for creating online, location-independent businesses, but his formula for reshaping your goals and priorities applies to anyone ready to make the leap out of a corporate career.

Why We Like The Book

Tim’s willingness to call out our toxic modern work culture for the ways it fails individuals, families, and businesses feels as relevant to us today as it was revolutionary when he first published it almost a decade ago. The latest addition remains focused primarily on mindset but also includes updated sections with resources and suggestions for how to implement DEAL in your own life.

In A Nutshell

  • More than 50 practical tips and case studies from readers (including families) who have doubled their income
  •  Real-world templates you can copy for eliminating e-mail, negotiating with bosses and clients
  • How Lifestyle Design principles can be suited to unpredictable economic times
  • How to eliminate 50% of your work in 48 hours using the principles of a forgotten Italian economist

4. Hustle: The Power to Charge Your Life with Money, Meaning, and Momentum

A mindset book for people who don’t like the idea of mindset books, Patrick Vlaskovits, Neil Patel, and Jonas Koffler take a hard look at the ways most people self-sabotage when trying to make changes that would lead to greater happiness, more free time, or higher income. The good news? They’ll also lead you out of the ‘Cycle of Suck’ using tools and techniques hard-won from their own epic successes — and failures.

What You Will Learn

Each of Hustle’s three sections addresses a specific challenge (or opportunity) when it comes to making a fundamental lifestyle shift: Head, Heart, and Habits. In each section, you’ll explore the common behavioral patterns and cognitive traps we set for ourselves — and learn how to use your own brand of hustle to get out of your own way.

Why We Like The Book

Those eager to make a change but allergic to anything ‘new age’ or ‘fluffy’ will find a lot to like in Hustle.  The authors share stories from their own lives about times when things got messy. Patel lost over $1 million investing in a failed company before he could legally drink, and Koffler suffered a stress-induced stroke while working at a startup. They’ve been in the trenches and aren’t afraid to share the messy parts of their personal narratives to help you in your pursuit of growth.

In A Nutshell

  • Ways to create your own luck and “POP”
  • How to betray yourself to stay true to yourself—and develop your potential
  • The four major career hustles and the path that’s best for you
  • Why you must own your dreams, not rent dreams from others

5. The Side Hustle: How to Turn Your Spare Time into $1000 a Month or More

Title aside, Nick Loper isn’t offering you a get-rich-quick scheme or a guarantee in his book on side hustles. 6. So You Want to Start a Side Hustle

Husband and wife team Craig Clickner and Carrie Bohlig founded their first side hustle for more than just the extra income – they wanted a vehicle to change their lives. Warm, witty, and full of honest personal anecdotes about their journey from ‘wantrepreneurs’, to successful co-founders of three thriving businesses, So You Want to Start a Side Hustle will help you develop the “Life set” you need to thrive.

What You Will Learn

For Bohlig and Clickner, succeeding in entrepreneurship requires more than business acumen, an innovative idea, or a rock-solid self-image. You need to begin with an understanding of who you are, what you value, and the kind of life you want to build. The authors don’t skimp on practical advice, many readers praise the portions of the book dedicated to financial literacy, but the bulk of the material focuses on the importance of knowing your purpose before investing in a side hustle.

Why We Like The Book

We appreciate Bohlig and Clickner’s engaging writing and thoughtful exercises. If you’re looking for a straightforward how-to guide, however, this might not be the best fit.

In A Nutshell

  • Real-life stories, lessons learned from the authors’ personal wins and losses
  • A framework that allows you to sharpen your focus, overcome challenges and obstacles
  • Help you create a side hustle that has an ongoing impact on your life and generates lasting success and revenue

7. Hustle Believe Receive: An 8-Step Plan to Changing Your Life and Living Your Dream

Abandoned by her husband at the height of the 2008 financial crisis, Sarah Centrella had to find a way to support herself and three young children while starting over from scratch. Her story, which starts in a state welfare office and ends with a multi-million dollar speaking and consulting business, will inspire anyone struggling to find the will to begin in business.

What You Will Learn

Centrella lives by the code of “hustle, believe and receive,” which couples the idea of manifesting what you desire with taking concrete action to advance your goal. It’s not enough, she explains, to visualize your dream life and feel comfortable. You need to make a plan — however outlandish — for you how you’re going to get it. Centrella spoke to over 50 business leaders, entertainment luminaries, and professional athletes about how they dared to dream big and take audacious steps to achieve them.

Why We Like The Book

An ideal book for those curious about the idea of “manifesting” the law of attraction, Hustle Believe Receive will appeal to those battling adversity. We do wish, however, that she had included more insight into how she made the leap from a corporate career to side hustling.

In A Nutshell

  • Sarah completely changed her life of poverty to enable her to live her dream in just eighteen months
  • A simple eight-step plan for achieving success known as the #HBRMethod

8. Mastery

From Robert Greene, author of the influential bestseller The 48 Laws of Power, this is the book for you if you’re wondering how to transform your hobby or passion into a skill or vocation.

What You Will Learn

Ambitiously billed as “a guide to unlocking your potential for greatness,Mastery examines the lives of undisputed experts in fields ranging from biology to dance to manufacturing to discover how, regardless of innate talent, they became the undisputed leaders in their chosen professions. Greene shies away from easy conclusions and acknowledges that innate talent plays a role but ultimately concludes that all people have the capacity for greatness given the willingness and discipline to hone their craft.

Why We Like The Book

Less a book about side hustles and more a meditation on the importance of practice, Mastery nevertheless contains words of wisdom for entrepreneurs on why anyone, given time and perseverance, can succeed.

In A Nutshell

  • Learn the secrets of the field you have chosen
  • Study the behaviors of Albert Einstein, Charles Darwin, Leonardo da Vinci, and other Masters
  • Robert Greene has spent a lifetime studying the laws of power
  • Readers will learn how to unlock the passion within and become masters

9. Leadership: Stay Hungry. Be Humble. Always Hustle.

If your side hustle requires a team to become a reality, or if you suddenly find yourself managing contractors or assistants as your business expands, you’ll want to read this book. Drawing on his years of experience growing Catalyst, an organization dedicated to developing religious and professional leaders, Lomenick boils down effective management to three simple principles.

What You Will Learn

The three “H’s” in H3 stands for humble, hungry, and hustle — characteristics Lomenick believes define any effective leader, regardless of context. Through humility, we gain insights into our own shortcomings and learn from our competitor’s successes. Staying hungry keeps us curious and passionate about ideas and the world, priming us for innovation and helping us remain receptive to what our teams have to say. Hustle helps us set the expectations that create a culture of excellence and commitment that attract talented people.

Why We Like The Book

An excellent primer on leadership that avoids kitschy exercises and platitudes, Lomenick’s book is a must-read for anyone new to managing people. Some readers felt, however, that the book could use a little tightening, and we found that the pacing was a bit rushed in the second half.

In A Nutshell

  • Insights from more than two decades of work alongside thought-leaders such as Jim Collins and Malcom Gladwell, Fortune 500 CEOs and start-up entrepreneurs
  • Lomenick identifies 20 essential leadership habits that help readers embody those qualities
  • Offering practical steps to embrace these habits
  • Simple but effective guide on how to lead well in whatever capacity the reader may be in

10. How to Start a Side Hustle (Survive the Modern World)

Aimed at Generation Z and above, Kaylene Langford’s pocket guide to entrepreneurship packs a surprising amount of substance into a deceptively slim volume. By turns irreverent, thoughtful, and practical, this book encourages those skeptical of the benefits of a traditional job to make the leap into self-employment by following precise instructions on how to design a business model, build a brand identity and approach social media marketing.

What You Will Learn

Despite the informal, chatty tone, Langford manages to convey a surprising amount of necessary information that anyone thinking of starting a serious business will need to consider. Mindset plays a role, according to Langford, as does hustle, but real adults also understand the importance of incorporating, signing contracts, and branding.

Why We Like The Book

Rarely do engage and relatable books manage to nail the nitty-gritty aspects of entrepreneurship, and we admire Langford’s ability to toggle between BFF and business advisor. If, however, your side hustle doesn’t fit in the “startup” niche, some of the content may feel irrelevant.

In A Nutshell

  • It inspires you to take your career into your own hands
  • It will help you to design a viable business model and drive you to bring your ideas to the market
  • Practical tips, hacks, and advice from both professional business people and unconventional company founders
  • It tackles big subjects in a fun and digestible way

11. Sidehustle Millionaire: How to Build a Side Business That Creates Financial Freedom

Provocative title aside, Tony Whatley doesn’t claim that following his blueprint for entrepreneurship will lead to millions. His goals for his readers are a bit more down to earth: leave your joyless corporate job, make more money, and enjoy what you do for a living.

What You Will Learn

In service of these hopes, Whatley devotes the bulk of his book to the higher-level practical information you’ll need to scale a business to the point of replacing your traditional income. If you’ve already managed to establish your side hustle and are ready to elevate to the next level, Whatley has you covered. He addresses business planning, funding, accounting, and marketing at a higher level than other books we reviewed.

Why We Like The Book

We like that Whatley takes it up a notch to address the question of how to scale, but found the writing jargon-heavy. It’s also not the best fit for readers with business experience, for whom much of the content will feel repetitive.

In A Nutshell

  • The author shares with you the mindset, strategies, and instructions on how to start your first business
  • Learn the fundamentals of idea evaluation, funding, branding, marketing, corporate structures, government registration, financials, and website development
  • Insights as to how to create a business in a minimal time
  • It provides a step-by-step framework on how to scale your side hustle into a full time business

12. What If It Does Work Out? How a Side Hustle Can Change Your Life

Professional side hustler” and business coach Susie Moore walks readers through the early days of deciding to transform a hobby or passion into a business while bypassing common pitfalls and nailing some of the more uncomfortable aspects of entrepreneurship.

What You Will Learn

While much of the material Moore covers can be found in other books we profiled, her sales background gives her advice on marketing, branding, and self-promotion some extra depth and credibility. If you’ve already got a solid idea and understand the nuts and bolts of business but struggle with finding customers and clients or closing the deal, this is the book for you. Moore also helps wantrepreneurs break out of limiting beliefs, and wobbling side hustlers stay the course when things get tough.

Why We Like The Book

The no-nonsense, straightforward style appealed to us, but we wish Moore had focused exclusively on sales and marketing rather than reproducing concepts others addressed more thoroughly.

In A Nutshell

  • Actionable information, tips, and strategies
  • life coach and professional side hustler Susie Moore offers expert tips and guidance to help you earn an extra source of income by doing something you love
  • The author guides you through all of the planning stages and potential obstacles

13. The Side Hustle Bible: 150+ Side Hustle Ideas and How to Start Making Money Right Away – Make Money Online and Offline

If you’re a person with a pulse and a desire to start a side hustle, this book will have an idea that suits your skills, budget, and bandwidth. A truly innovative and comprehensive collection of ideas, Jacob Wallace, has a business proposition for anyone, from creatives to professionals to parents.

What You Will Learn

Similar to 100 Side Hustles, The Side Hustle Bible aims to demystify the process of starting on a journey of entrepreneurship by jump-starting your imagination as to possible sources of income. The tone and content take a more straightforward approach, however, making this less of a true reference and more of a solid jumping-off point for new side hustlers.

Why We Like The Book

As you might expect from a book that includes more than 100 different side hustles, plus tips and resources, Wallace hits the high points of each potential business before moving on. If entrepreneurship is a meal, Wallace serves up a great appetizer, but this book alone isn’t enough to make the main course. Serious side hustlers will need to look elsewhere for more practical guidance.

14. Crushing It!: How Great Entrepreneurs Build Their Business and Influence-and How You Can, Too

Fans of Gary Vaynerchuk’s 2009 best-seller Crush It! and anyone looking to build a business online will find a lot to love in the 2018 follow-up. Building on his central premise — that all entrepreneurs need a great personal brand — Vaynerchuk dives deep into the mechanics of social media marketing.

What You Will Learn

With a platform-by-platform approach that breaks down how successful entrepreneurs have leveraged specific social media to develop the online identities that propel their businesses forward, Vaynerchuk helps readers understand how to position themselves as authorities and build a loyal audience of potential customers.

Why We Like The Book

More than a guide to side hustles, Vaynerchuk’s book will help you build a personal brand that you can use in multiple contexts. Our one complaint? Vaynerchuk takes some of his own advice a bit too far — mentions of Crush It! appear in almost every section of the book. We’re also skeptical of books that promise to tell you how to master specific platforms, as algorithms change frequently and companies release updates.

In A Nutshell

  • Shares stories from other entrepreneurs who have grown wealthier—and not just financially—than they ever imagined possible by following Crush It principles
  • Gary dissects every current major social media platform so that anyone, from a plumber to a professional ice skater, will know exactly how to amplify his or her personal brand on each
  • Offers both theoretical and tactical advice on how to become the biggest thing on social media platforms
  • It’s a blueprint to living life on your own terms

15. Clever Girl Finance: The Side Hustle Guide: Build a Successful Side Hustle and Increase Your Income

Part of the ‘Clever Girl Finance’ series, Bola Sokunbi’s The Side Hustle Guide takes a uniquely female-centric approach to the question of whether and how to approach entrepreneurship. Understanding that many people who identify as women aren’t as comfortable or familiar with some of the skills required to find a successful business, Soknubi works hard to demystify the process.

What You Will Learn

Throughout the book, Soknubi emphasizes the importance of understanding how and where you plan to spend money and time. You don’t have to get caught up in planning, she explains, but you absolutely must have one. The foundation of that plan? Solid financial literacy. She covers everything from business bank accounts to credit to basic accounting to ensure that you always have an accurate picture of the health of your business.

Why We Like The Book

A book geared primarily towards POC and those who identify as female might seem a bit niche for a ‘best of list, but Soknubi’s back-to-basics approach will resonate with anyone who finds the financial aspect of entrepreneurship challenging.

In A Nutshell

  • Build your confidence, eliminate your fears, and strengthen your focus
  • Establish a strong foundation for your new business, even without prior experience
  • Create a solid plan to brand, market, and grow a business for your customers
  • Write a realistic financial plan for your side hustle and to create long-term wealth
