Wouldn’t it be nice to get paid to drive? Working for delivery or rideshare companies is a popular way to make money. These platforms give drivers the freedom to work when and where they want, as long as they have a car and a smartphone.
While platforms like Uber, Lyft, and Grubhub are the most well-known, there are plenty of other services that will pay you to get into your car. Some of these even pay better than well-known retailers.
When thinking about the best way to get paid to drive, consider your personality. If you enjoy interacting with people, then a ridesharing service could be the way to go. Those who like to work on their own may be better suited to food or grocery delivery.
Another huge factor to consider is which platforms are available in your area. While most companies and their apps in this list operate nationwide, some may not have a large presence if you live in a small city or rural location. The good news is that nothing is stopping you from signing up to multiple platforms to see which ones are the best fit.
20 Ways to Get Paid to Drive
We’ve split the platforms on this list into the following categories: food delivery, grocery delivery, package delivery, alcohol delivery, ridesharing apps, and task apps. We’ve also included two related services we think will interest those with cars looking to earn some extra cash: car advertising and car rental apps.
Get Paid to Deliver Food
Food delivery drivers take orders from restaurants to customers. These services are common and are available in most metropolitan areas.
The major benefit of this type of platform is the flexibility to work when and where you want. They are also typically easy to sign up to, even if you don’t have delivery experience, and they often pay on a daily or weekly basis.
DoorDash
Working for DoorDash: DoorDash is a delivery company and app for restaurants and takeaways (aka carryout or to-go). Drivers use the app to view and accept jobs. Each task involves taking the food from the restaurant to the customer. Once signed up, you can get work straight away. The service is available throughout the U.S., Canada, and Australia.
How Much Does DoorDash Pay? How much you earn with DoorDash varies. Pay for each delivery takes into account the estimated distance, time, and what the company calls the “desirability” of the order. The good news is you can see how much an order pays before you accept it, and drivers receive 100% of customer tips. Indeed shows drivers earn an average of $15.57 per hour working for DoorDash, however some people have been able to make up to $25 per hour.

Postmates
Working for Postmates: Postmates drivers deliver food, groceries, alcohol, or other items to customers. Drivers work their own schedules and pick up jobs via the app. Once you have earned money, you can cash out whenever you want. This makes Postmates a useful way to cover unexpected costs. You can use a car, moped, or bicycle, and you can even walk in some locations.
How Much Does Postmates Pay? The amount you earn varies depending on the specifics of the delivery and the location. You get a fee for each pick-up and drop-off, a per-minute rate for time spent at a collection venue, and a per-mile rate for the distance between pick-up and delivery locations. You also keep all your tips.
Postmates has payment guarantees that ensure drivers earn over a minimum amount if they reach certain criteria. The exact amount depends on the worker’s location. As an example, drivers that complete 100 deliveries in 14 days in San Francisco are guaranteed $700.

(Editor’s Note: On July 6, 2020, Uber announced its acquisition of Postmates for $2.65B in stock.)
Uber Eats
Working for Uber Eats: Uber Eats drivers deliver food from restaurants and takeaways (or to-go) to customers. Drivers work when they want and for as long as they want. Once you finish a job, you can cash out instantly. To drive with Uber Eats, you must have one or more years of driving experience, a car manufactured in the last 20 years, a license, registration, and appropriate insurance.
How Much Does Uber Eats Pay? Uber Eats’ payment structure takes into consideration the time and distance of the job, a trip supplement, and promotions during busy times. You keep 100% of your tips. Glassdoor says drivers get an average base pay of $11 per hour.

Grubhub
Working for Grubhub: Grubhub is a restaurant and takeaway (carry-out) delivery service. Drivers can work when and for how long they want, but they must choose hours in advance. Reports from past employees on Indeed suggest that when you first sign up, only a few shifts are available, but this will change as you complete jobs successfully. With Grubhub, you can get paid as soon as you have money in your account. Anyone with a car, license, and insurance can sign up to the platform — although you must be 19.
How Much Does Grubhub Pay? Your GrubHub rate takes into consideration the total miles you cover, including both pick-up and delivery, as well as the total time you spend on a job. You also get to keep all your tips. The exact rates you receive will depend on the market you work in. Drivers make an average of $12.56 per hour, according to Indeed.

Get Paid to Deliver Groceries
Grocery delivery is similar to food delivery in that you pick up orders and take them to customers. The main difference is the product you are delivering. The potential for heavy orders means some of these services require workers who can lift a specified amount.
Instacart
Working for Instacart: Instacart is a grocery delivery service. Drivers pick up orders from shops and take them to customers. You must be 18 to work for the service and have a car and a smartphone, and you need to be able to lift 50lbs without assistance. Like other services on this list, you can choose when and where you work.
How Much Does Instacart Pay? Your pay will depend on the number of items in the order, the items themselves, and the distance you have to travel. You also receive 100% of tips. According to Glassdoor, the average hourly rate for a full-service shopper on Instacart is $11.

Shipt
Working for Shipt: Shipt is a subscription delivery platform. Drivers shop for customers and take the items to their homes. The main requirements are: a car manufactured after 1997, a license and insurance, and the ability to lift 40lbs. You can work at any time between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m.
How Much Does Shipt Pay? Shipt pays based on how long it will take to complete an order. You can see an estimate of the time a task will take before you decide to accept it. You get paid on Friday for the work you did between the previous Monday to Sunday. You also keep 100% of your tips. Shift says drivers can earn between $16 and $22.

Get Paid to Deliver Packages
Delivering packages has a lot in common with food and grocery delivery services. You’ll need to pick up parcels and then take them to a destination. Some delivery services have options for long-haul delivery, although most of the work is short trips.
AmazonFlex
Working for AmazonFlex: AmazonFlex drivers deliver packages for Amazon. You have flexibility about when and where you work, and you choose your hours by booking out blocks of time. You can do this up to a week in advance, which is a useful way to plan your time and your earnings.
The downside is that the service is currently only available in around 50 U.S. cities. Plus, recruitment is typically less open than some of the other options on this list, which means even if AmazonFlex operates in your city, there might not be opportunities when you are looking for work. You can see the cities currently recruiting here.
How Much Does AmazonFlex Pay? Amazon says that most drivers earn between $18 and $25 an hour. This will depend on your location, how fast you are, and whether you receive any tips.
Roadie
Working for Roadie: Roadie drivers deliver packages both locally and across the country. Once you sign up, you will see a list of orders to choose from, which includes package information, pick-up and delivery info, approximate delivery times, and additional info. It’s also possible to bunch deliveries to earn more money in less time. You have control over which deliveries you choose to accept.
How Much Does Roadie Pay? Roadie pays an average of $15 per trip. You can see the exact amount each trip pays and an estimate of the time it will take before you accept it. Long haul deliveries pay more and can be an excellent way to earn if you were planning to take a long trip anyway.

Favor
Working for Favor: Favor drivers deliver packages, as well as pretty much anything else customers need. The site even calls its workers “personal assistants,” rather than delivery drivers. You can work whenever and for as long as you want. You can even have a full-time schedule.
Drivers must be 18 and have reliable transport. It’s possible to start earning the day you apply. The one major downside of Favor for most people is that the company (and app) only operate in cities in Texas.
How Much Does Favor Pay? Favor says its drivers earn between $10 and $18 per hour. All hours scheduled through the platform have a minimum rate, and you receive 100% of your tips.
Get Paid to Deliver Booze
This category is small and self-explanatory. Drivers take alcohol from suppliers to customers, often on short notice.
Saucey
Working for Saucey: Saucey is a site that specializes in alcohol delivery. The service is currently only available in a limited number of cities in the U.S., although it says it is expanding. Because Saucey’s workers handle alcohol, you must be at least 21 to drive for the company.
How Much Does Saucey Pay? Pay varies depending on the delivery. You receive a set amount for each delivery plus $0.5 per item in the order and any tips. The site says that if you deliver 50 orders, you will receive at least $350, meaning a minimum of $7 per delivery.
Get Paid to Drive People Around
Ridesharing apps operate in most countries and cities, making them a great way to earn money if some of the other methods aren’t available in your area. Lyft and Uber are the two most well-known platforms, but there are other options.
Lyft
Working for Lyft: Applying to drive for Lyft involves scanning some documents, getting a background check, and passing a car inspection. If accepted, you’ll use the app to pick up people who need a ride and take them to their destination. You can accept jobs and earn money to suit your schedule. If you don’t have a car, it’s possible to rent one through the Express Drive Program.
How Much Does Lyft Pay? Lyft pays a fee based on how long a ride takes and the distance. You also keep 100% of any tips you receive. During times of increased demand, Lyft may increase its fees to encourage drivers to work. Lyft also provides additional insurance protection for free. Glassdoor suggests that Lyft drivers make around $16 per hour on average.
Uber
Working for Uber: Getting signed up for Uber is straightforward if you have an eligible vehicle and enough driving experience (one year if over 23, three years if under 23). Once signed up, log into the app to begin accepting rides. Uber will rent you a car if you don’t have one already, or if yours doesn’t meet company requirements.
How Much Does Uber Pay? How much you make with Uber will depend on how long a journey takes and how far you drive. The service pays extra during times of high demand, and you get to keep all your tips. You may be able to win bonuses for completing a certain number of trips in a particular time frame, or by driving at specific times.
Wingz
Working for Wingz: Wingz is an interesting alternative to Uber and Lyft, as customers reserve trips in advance with their favorite drivers. The service is a good choice for preorganized events like airport trips or meetings, while drivers benefit from knowing in advance when and for how long they will work. It also means drivers can build relationships with customers to gain repeat work.
How Much Does Wingz Pay? Wingz doesn’t advertise how much drivers get paid. It’s currently smaller than the above services, and there isn’t much public information available. Some sources suggest the pay per ride is quite high, although most trips are one way, which eats into earnings. You are also limited in that you can only work when people choose your service — unlike Uber and Lyft, where all jobs are open to all drivers.
HopSkipDrive
Working for HopSkipDrive: HopSkipDrive drivers take children to school. The service is strict about who they take on — you’ll need five years of caregiving experience, a good driving record, a vehicle manufactured in the last 10 years, and a multi-agency background check. Once set up, you can begin to set your schedule. The downside is that the service is currently available in only a limited number of areas.
How Much Does HopSkipDrive Pay? HopSkipDrive claims its drivers earn up to $32 an hour. Indeed puts the average hourly rate at a slightly lower — yet still decent — $25.23. Drivers get paid on a weekly basis, and it is possible to see estimated earnings from within the app.

Get Paid to Advertise on Your Car
People who drive in busy areas are potentially seen hundreds or thousands of times every day. This makes their cars great places to put advertisements. If you drive a lot and you’re willing to place branded decals on your vehicle, then advertising on your car can be a great way to earn passive income. It is also a good way for delivery or rideshare drivers to earn extra money while on the job.
Carvertise
Working for Carvertise: Carvertise matches high mileage drivers with advertisers. Just send in information about how and where you normally drive, and the company will contact you if they have clients who want to advertise on your car. Most clients require you to drive at least 30 miles per day, have a car made in 2008 or later, and have a clean record. If you agree to an advertising offer, Carvertise will wrap your car and you’ll get paid every month. At the end of the campaign, Carvertsie removes the wrap for you. At this point, you can be matched with a new client.
How Much Does Carvertise Pay? The amount you earn will depend on the campaign and will take into consideration factors such as where you are based and how long the campaign runs for. The site says you can earn between $300 and $1,200 per campaign. You get paid monthly.
Wrapify
Working for Wrapify: Wrapify matches advertisers with car owners who are happy to wrap their car in exchange for a monthly fee. If you are chosen for a campaign, turn on the Wrapify app while you drive, and the company will pay you depending on how many qualifying miles you drive. Your car must be a 2010 model or newer, it must have minimal paint or body damage, and you must meet the background check requirements.
How Much Does Wrapify Pay? Each campaign is different, but Wrapify estimates that drivers earn from $181 per month for a Lite Wrap to $452 per month for a full wrap. The exact amount you get will depend on how much you drive each day in zones covered by the campaign, as well as the times of day you drive, and the number of people on the road.
Get Paid to Perform Tasks with Your Car
Signing up to a task website will let people hire you for delivery jobs on an on-demand basis. If you have a truck or van, the second option in this section can be a good earner.
TaskRabbit
Working for TaskRabbit: TaskRabbit is a platform that connects people with specific skills to those who need work done. It offers various types of work, including a delivery service. To work on the platform, just sign up and then fill out your profile, including the types of tasks you are skilled in. You’ll also need to attend an in-person onboarding session. People looking for workers in your area can then search for your profile and hire you to perform the work they need.
How Much Does TaskRabbit Pay? TaskRabbit workers choose their own rates. However, you’ll need to be competitive in your area to get jobs. As of this writing, searching for delivery drivers in New York reveals hourly rates starting at around $25.
GoShare
Working for GoShare: GoShare is an on-demand delivery service that specializes in larger deliveries and vehicles, although there are also opportunities for those with smaller cars. You have the freedom to accept or reject jobs as they come up around your schedule. The platform currently operates in a limited but growing number of U.S. locations.
How Much Does GoShare Pay? GoShare says its projects offer some of the highest per-hour rates of any gig-delivery service. The exact pay you get will depend on your vehicle and the type of work. Average earnings range from $33 per hour for cars, to $66 per hour for box trucks, according to the platform.
Get Paid to Rent Out Your Vehicle
Renting out your car is an easy way to earn money passively. Rather than driving, you can make your car available to others when you aren’t using it and get paid when someone uses your vehicle.
GetAround
Working for GetAround: GetAround lets people rent cars by the hour or by the day.
When you list your car on the app, the company will install a device that lets people unlock your vehicle once they pay for it, without the need for your keys. You’ll publish your car’s availability so people can only book it when you aren’t using it. The automatic unlocking and in-app booking means that the income you earn is completely passive.
How much Does GetAround Pay? You take home 60% of the rental fees your car brings in. This means it is possible to earn hundreds of dollars per month and thousands per year, although, the actual amount you get will vary depending on demand in your area and your car’s availability. GetAround pays for insurance and roadside assistance, which should reduce potential risks.

RVShare
Working for RVShare: RVShare lets you rent out your RV on a nightly basis. This includes both trailers and drivable vehicles. You set your own prices and availability, making it a great way to earn money from your vehicle when you aren’t using it.
How Much Does RVShare Pay? RVShare says you can earn up to $22,000 per year from a travel trailer and $60,000 for a Class A motorhome. You are most likely to hit these numbers if you live in an area with high demand and you make your vehicle available for most of the year. The company provides best-in-class insurance coverage.
Final Thoughts
If you own a car and a smartphone and you want an easy way to work with a flexible schedule, then delivery or rideshare platforms are an excellent option. The pay isn’t always amazing, but you can typically earn at least $12 to $15 per hour and the rate can be higher.
The key to earn a consistent income is to sign up to a few services/apps and test which ones have high demand in your area. You can also keep multiple services open if you are struggling to get enough work on a single platform.
If you want to complement your driving income, then consider using one of the advertising services on our list to earn extra money while you drive. Or, you can list your vehicle on a rental platform to earn money while you aren’t using it.
